A small dining room built around one open fire. We serve a seven-course tasting menu, a short à la carte board and late suppers at the kitchen counter.

How a dinner unfolds

The evening, stage by stage

The tasting menu takes around two and a half hours. À la carte runs at your own pace. Either way, this is how the room moves once the fire is going.

  1. From 17:30

    The fire is lit

Birch and apple wood burn down to embers while the first guests settle in. There's a drink at the bar or straight to the table, whichever you like.

  2. First half hour

    Snacks from the pass

Small bites come out by hand: rye crisps, cured fish and something pickled from last season's shelves.

  3. The middle

    Hearth courses

Fish, vegetables and meat cooked over the embers or buried in them. Bread is baked daily and comes with cultured butter.

  4. The slow finish

    Sweet and quiet

Dessert, valley cheese and a pot of herbal tea. The table is yours for the night, so nobody will hurry you out.

“We cook with the seasons and with what the fire will do on the day. The menu changes when the valley does.”

Kitchen & sourcing

One fire, a short list of growers

The kitchen has no gas range. Everything is roasted, smoked, baked or warmed over one wood hearth, so the menu follows what the fire does well and what the season brings.

  • Vegetables from small farms up the valley
  • Whole animals, butchered in house
  • Fish landed the same week
  • Foraged herbs, berries and mushrooms
  • Preserves put up each summer and autumn
  • Bread and butter made daily

Can you cook for allergies and dietary needs?

Yes. The tasting menu has a full vegetarian version, and we can adapt for most allergies, including gluten, dairy and nuts, as long as you tell us when you book. A day's notice lets us plan properly rather than just leave things off.

Are children welcome?

Children are very welcome at Sunday lunch and for early à la carte dinners. The tasting menu and counter supper are long, late sittings, so they suit older children who are happy to sit for a while.

Do you take larger groups?

The room seats groups of up to eight at our long table. For larger parties, or to take the whole room for an evening, mention it in the notes of your request and we'll reply with options.

Can we walk in without a booking?

We keep a few bar stools and the odd table for walk-ins each night, first come, first served. Weekends usually book up, so we'd recommend reserving.

Is the restaurant accessible?

The dining room and restroom are step-free from the entrance. The counter seats are high stools, so let us know if you'd prefer a table and we'll arrange it.

Is there a dress code?

No. Come as you are. The room stays warm near the hearth, so a lighter layer underneath is a good idea in winter.

What if our plans change?

Just let us know by replying to your confirmation email. For tasting menu and counter bookings we ask for at least 48 hours' notice, because we buy and prepare ingredients for each guest.
